Please ensure that children are reading every day. It is important that they are practicing their sounds and enjoying stories they read or that are read to them. Remember that it is important to talk about the book too. Comprehension skills are just as important as decoding. 

Use your red phonic books to revise the 'Speed Sounds' that your child has been learning. Look for the sounds in reading books. In the packs sent home, we have included a writing book that Mrs Smith has begun that you are welcome to use, a pencil that we use in school to encourage the correct grip and a phonic card. We have covered Set 1 and 2 sounds with Reception children. Set 3 sounds are on the back of this sheet and there is a lovely video under the 'Phonics' icon where children can read along with Sylvia to practice. Please ensure that children are secure with Set 1 and 2 before beginning to learn the Set 3 sounds. 

Below are some different activities to complete. Please ensure if children are writing words, that they are using the correct letter formation and working hard to hold their pencil correctly and comfortably.

Word Purses

We have sent all Reception children home today with a word purse. This had been introduced gradually with some children but wanted all now to have them. 

In the little purse there is all of the 'High Frequency' or 'Tricky Red Words' that children need to learn. The idea is to take out a few and concentrate on them, rather than all at once. You could try...

• Red Word Bingo - children choose four or six words to write out on a sheet of paper or whiteboard. Spread the cards out upside down, picking up one at a time and encouraging children to recognise and read the word. If they have it on their board, they can cross it off until Bingo is called!
• Tracing, copying and writing of tricky words in various media will increase recall. Students may write them in the air with large movements, on the ground with a wet brush, in sand or shaving cream or in chalk on whiteboards. They may cut letters out of newspapers or magazines or use letter tiles, magnetic letters, stamps, play-dough or string letter beads. As the student writes or creates the letters in the correct order, they should simultaneously say the letter names.
