Reading is a key aspect of the curriculum at Clough and Risegate, it appears in all of the subjects and requires children to know how to read and understand what they have read. With this being so important we aim to promote reading both at home and at school.
In EYFS and KS1 reading takes place every day through phonics sessions and reading opportunities from the Phonics scheme and the sharing of stories with the children to gain a love of reading. As the children move off the Read Write Inc. scheme the children are exposed to reading in more contexts. More information about Phonics can be found in the Phonics and Early Reading Tab.
Reading is developed in school through whole class and group reading sessions, where books are shared with the children and discussions around what has been read take place. This can be at a word level or on a more in-depth inferential level. Talk around what has been read develops the children and builds their confidence as they work towards being able to write answers around independent reading.
Another way children develop their reading skills is through the Accelerated Reader program which is for all children who are not reading on the Read Write Inc. scheme. This program will enable all children to read challenging, rewarding and enjoyable texts, while checking their understanding at the end of the book by asking the children questions on their reading. We LOVE reading at Clough and Risegate Community Primary School.
