All Year 1 children are expected to take the Phonic Screening Check in June. Even if this now does not take place, we still want children to be ready for when it does.
There is more information about this that can be found in the 'Phonic Pack for Parents' sent home in book bags on 17th March, which is usually given out on Parent's Evenings this term anyway. This pack contains 6 activity mats that focus on preparing for the check. There is a useful 'Help sheet' and a phonic card for reference.
Please ensure that children are regularly reviewing the sounds learned from the phonic card. All Year 1 children have covered Set 1, 2 & 3 sounds. Please review these sounds daily as we find this is most successful way to make them stick. Keep working on those that are less familiar. The key for the Screening Check is that children can then recognise these sounds within words, both real and psuedo (made up).
Please find another copy of the pack below. In addition, there is a link to an online game that helps children to practice these words. Even though this is from 2018, the style of the check is exactly the same. If an alien appears, it is a made up word. Children just have to sound it out as they see it. If no alien, then it is a real word. Have fun!
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
