Reading at home is very important for your child to develop their fluency, vocabulary, experiencing a range of texts and beginning to read for pleasure. We ask if you can spare a few minutes to share the book your child is reading, discussing what has happened as well as what is happening. These discussions are vital for supporting your child in their understanding of what they are reading and are the foundations for developing comprehension skills, which are vital for all aspects of your child's education.
Reading at home helps your child to earn Dojos on Class Dojo which can be spend in the Dojo Shop. Dojos are awarded for every night your child reads at home with their reading being recorded in their Home School Record Book.
Reading at home earns the following Dojo's:
Monday Madness - 8 dojos
Two for Tuesday - 6 dojos
Wednesday - 3 dojos
Thursday - 3 dojos
Extra 5 Friday - 8 dojos
There is a range of homework in Maple Class, from reading at home, spellings, times tables the homework folder. Reading and Times Tables are ongoing pieces of homework being updated as required. Spellings will be changed weekly on a Monday but checks on previously taught words will happen throughout the year. The homework folders will be updated on a Wednesday with a new piece of homework so please ensure these folders are returned to school by Wednesday, however they can be handed in before then if the homework is complete.
More information about the various homework in Maple Class can be found below including links to any websites that may support your child.
As mentioned above we are passionate about reading in Maple Class and promote that your child reads at home regularly. This is to support your child in developing a love of reading and reading for pleasure.
Reading books are chosen by your child based on their Accelerated Reader scores from termly Star Tests. These give your child a numbered range which translates to a range of books that they can choose from. Once your child has finished their book we ask that they quiz on it to show their understanding of the book.
Spellings are sent out on a Monday for your child to practice at home. We ask that you encourage your child to practice writing them at home to learn them as well as using edshed.com to provide fun games for your child to use as well. Your child has got an individual login for edshed, which can be found in the front of their Home School Record Book. Any time to practice spellings is valuable for your child as these are patterns and words that they are expected to know and link to the national curriculum. These will be added as assignments on edshed for your child each week and will relate to the words that your child has in their record book.
You do not need to send proof of practice into school as we have informal checks on spelling and games linked to the words your child has been learning over the term. Any words your child is commonly misspelling will be added to their Record Book.
Part of the ongoing homework in Maple Class is the developing the fluency of the times tables in preparation for the Year 4 Multiplication Check. To develop your child's times tables, we ask you make time for Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) at home which has tables set for your child to develop. Your child has an individual login for TTRS and this is on the front cover of their Home School Record Books. The more time to practice the times tables the more confident your child will be with answering multiplication questions.
The homework will have either a piece of maths or a comprehension each week for your child to try to complete. The folder will be handed out on a Wednesday with homework to be returned by the following Wednesday or before then if the homework is completed. We ask that if your child requires support to answer any questions, that you leave a mark next to the question so we are aware or that your child leaves the answer blank and we will go through this with them in school.
