🏠 Homework in Oak Class

Homework in Oak Class is designed to be short, manageable and useful. As pupils move through Year 5 and Year 6, we also want them to begin developing the independence and organisation they will need when they move on to secondary school.

📚 Reading – 20 minutes every day

The most important homework we ask pupils to complete is 20 minutes of reading each day.

Those 20 minutes really do add up! Children who read for around 20 minutes a day can encounter approximately 1.8 million words over a school year. Regular reading also helps children to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and writing skills. Research has consistently found links between reading for pleasure and stronger progress in areas such as vocabulary, spelling and wider academic attainment.

Reading does not always have to mean a huge novel either! Pupils can enjoy fiction, non-fiction, comics, magazines, newspapers, biographies or any other suitable text that gets them reading.

After reading, pupils should record their reading in their Reading Record. Regularly completed reading records can earn pupils 3 Dojos – a nice little reward for building a brilliant habit!

✏️ Weekly Homework

Each week, pupils will also receive one homework sheet, which will usually be either:

➗ Maths – practising or revisiting skills we have been working on in class.

📝 Grammar – helping pupils to strengthen their spelling, punctuation and grammar knowledge.

Homework is designed to reinforce learning rather than take over the whole evening!

🎒 Becoming Secondary-School Ready

One of our big aims in Oak Class is preparing pupils for the next stage of their education.

Remembering to take homework home, completing it carefully and handing it in on time might seem like a small thing, but these are really important habits to develop before secondary school.
